Diabetic nephropathy is one of the leading causes (along
with high blood pressure) of end stage renal disease in western societies. Unfortunately,
both of these conditions often co-exist. Diabetes mellitus often potentiates
the development of high blood pressure. In fact, about 72.96 million Indians have
both diabetes and hypertension. Diabetic nephropathy also contributes to a
significant percentage of patients on renal replacement therapy in India.

Kidney disease is slightly more common in type 1 diabetic patients however, the
majority of patients with end-stage renal disease have type 2 diabetes because
of the greater prevalence of type 2 diabetes worldwide. End-stage renal disease
in patients with type 2 diabetes is commoner among blacks than whites for reasons
that not very clear.
