Hypoglycemia is particularly common in type 1 diabetic
patients who must take insulin for survival. But it can occur in any person
with diabetes who takes any medication to lower their blood glucose. Diabetic
hypoglycemia is one of the most common types of hypoglycemia seen in emergency
medical rooms and hospitals. In most cases, the insulin therapy or oral
blood-sugar lowering medications cause the body's glucose to fall to a
below-normal level.

The condition may
also be caused by missing a meal or doing unexpected exercise and in some
cases, there is no known precipitating event. Patients may present with
sweating, nervousness, tremor and hunger. The patient may also be asymptomatic.
