The 'Honeymoon Period' in Diabetes

Sometimes the need for insulin decreases after diabetes has been diagnosed and treated properly. This circumstance is known as the "honeymoon period." It happens because some beta-cells become active again. These insulin producing cells were shocked by high blood sugars and had stopped working at the time that diabetes was first diagnosed. With normal blood sugar during treatment, these inactive cells regain their ability to make insulin. Some people can even do without insulin for a while during the "honeymoon period." Unfortunately the "honeymoon period" does not last long. Within a few months to a year, the remaining beta cells gradually disappear, and the need for injected insulin returns.
